Urad
Black gram known as urad is an important pulse crop that is grown throughout the country. Black gram plays an important role in the Indian diet, as it contains vegetable protein and supplements a cereal-based diet. It contains about 26% protein, which is almost three times that of cereals and other minerals and vitamins. It is also used as nutritive fodder, especially for milch animals. Major black gram-producing states include Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
